Holidays at Highbury: Understanding Jane Austen's Emma

Speakers who share our passion for Jane Austen will entertain us on a day devoted to Jane Austen and Emma:

**Professor Kay Young from UC Santa Barbara will deliver her JASNA Traveling Lecture on “’A Mind Lively and at Ease’: Imagination and Emma.”

**Our own Diana Birchall will give a talk on Mrs. Elton’s Bristol connections, “Mrs. Elton: the Bride From Bristol,” to accompany a reading of her short playlett The Courtship of Mrs. Elton.

**As Emma loves to advise, we have also planned a lunch activity, “Dear Jane”. As we gather around lunch, we will ponder fictional requests for advice from Jane Austen’s literary characters and discuss “What Would Jane Say”. Be prepared to meet new people and share your thoughts on the theme with the whole group.

In general their evenings were less engaged with friends than their mornings: but one complete dinner engagement, and out of the house too, there was no avoiding, though at Christmas. Mr. Weston would take no denial; they must all dine at Randalls one day; even Mr. Woodhouse was persuaded to think it a possible thing in preference to a division of the party.
--- Emma, Chapter 13

Like the party at Randalls, we will dine in a historic building fitted with all of the modern conveniences.

Our lunch menu is:

Spring Salad
Baby mixed greens with roasted pine nuts and bleu cheese tossed in a fresh citrus vinaigrette
&
Eggplant Ravioli Spinach Pasta with Tomato and Primavera Vegetable Sauce
or
Chairman's Reserved New York Strip Cooked in a Jack Daniel's sauce
or
New Zealand Orange Roughy Topped with Giant Capers and Lemon Butter
&
Raspberry Chocolate Ganache Torte
Rich dark chocolate truffle ganache over a moist cake layered with raspberry couli
