JASNA-SW Spring Meeting 2007

One cannot have too large a party. --Jane Austen

JASNA-Southwest held its Spring Meeting at the UCLA FACULTY CENTER on
MAY 5, 2007, from
10:30 A.M. to 3:45 P.M.

Three speakers who share our passion for Jane Austen joined us:

***Our very own Gracia Fay Ellwood spoke about “A Hole in Henry Crawford’s Heart.”

***Another local member, Laurie Viera Rigler, entertained us with some passages from her novel, Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict (Dutton, August 2, 2007). She also told us the story behind the book.

***Finally, past JASNA president Joan Klingel Ray traveled from Colorado to give us an illustrated lecture titled, “The Woman who Came to Dinner; Jane Austen Visits Country Houses.” She was also on hand to autograph copies of her newly released book, Jane Austen for Dummies.

We also hosted a Jane Austen White Elephant Sale. Members sold their new and used Jane Austen things and raised a total of $321 for JASNA's Fund for Hurricane Katrina Library Relief.

Our delicious lunch menu included . . .
Garden Salad

&

Sautéed Wild Pacific Red Snapper Margarita
(with lime, sea salt and tequila butter sauce)

or

Sautéed Breast of Chicken Piccata
(with white wine, capers, Italian parsley and light lemon butter sauce)

or

&

Dessert of Mixed Fruit Tart or Chocolate Mousse Cake

WHITE ELEPHANT SALE

Have your well-meaning friends and family members bought you Jane Austen books, cds, movies, and other paraphernalia that you already own? Have you ever accidentally (or perhaps, subconsciously) purchased a Jane Austen related book only to return home and realize that you already owned a copy? JASNA-SW came up with the perfect solution to this widespread problem: A Jane Austen White Elephant Sale.

We asked that members gather up their unwanted Jane Austen items (or other items, such as books and movies, which fellow Janeites might like) and bring them to the Spring Meeting. And consider rewarding their spring cleaning efforts with . . . more Jane Austen stuff! Sales were brisk. And since all proceeds went to fund books for libraries victimized by Hurricane Katrina, your shopping helped others. Thanks to all of you who donated and purchased items!

JANE AUSTEN FOR DUMMIES BOOK SIGNING

Professor Joan Ray signed copies of Jane Austen for Dummies at our event. If you already own a copy, congratulations on your good taste. If you don't, consider clicking on the picture of the book below to buy one.
